How much do you hate your friends, family & neighbors that don’t know Jesus Christ as Savior? You don’t? Then why do you not tell them of the salvation found only in Him? The Great Commission is pretty straightforward.
Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
And we all know of the command that Jesus gave to love our neighbors & enemies:
Matthew 5:43-46 (ESV)
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
If we are to love both our neighbors AND our enemies, how much do you have to hate your family, your loved ones, to not tell them of the one thing that will save them from eternal separation from God? What’s holding you back? Is it fear? Fear of being rejected? Are you so afraid to tell them the truth that you would rather that they die in their sins so that you won’t be embarrassed? Would you only shout to a drowning person that they are drowning or try and save them?
Maybe you think that there will be somebody else to tell them! Isn’t that the job of the preachers, anyway? Do you somehow believe that 1 Peter 2:5 & 9 applies only to “ordained” ministers? Beloved, all Christians are part of the “royal priesthood” that is the body of Christ! We just don’t always act like it.
1 Peter 2:5 & 9 (ESV)
5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
So if you get rid of the excuses of fear and duty (“it’s not my job”), what’s holding you back? You can only go back to your willingness. You know the truth that Jesus Christ is “THE Way, THE Truth & THE Life”(John 14:6), but you are too apathetic to tell your unsaved family and friends the Gospel message. Apathy is defined as: 1) lack of feeling or emotion; 2) lack of interest or concern (indifference). So it basically boils down to this – you just don’t care enough!
Consider this quote from atheist Penn Jillette:
“I’ve always said that I don’t respect people who don’t proselytize. I don’t respect that at all. If you believe that there’s a heaven and a hell, and people could be going to hell or not getting eternal life, and you think that it’s not really worth telling them this because it would make it socially awkward – and atheists who think people shouldn’t proselytize and who say just leave me along and keep your religion to yourself – how much do you have to hate somebody to not proselytize? How much do you have to hate somebody to believe everlasting life is possible and not tell them that?
I mean, if I believed, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that a truck was coming at you, and you didn’t believe that truck was bearing down on you, there is a certain point where I tackle you. And this is more important than that.”
~ Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller)
If you don’t witness (proselytize) to the lost that you know, then you are demonstrating such a callous disregard for their eternal security (their soul) that you might as well admit that you hate them. Thankfully, God loved you so much that He died on the cross to save you from the punishment for your sins … even while you hated Him. You say you don’t hate God? Then FEED HIS SHEEP!
