What Is Existentialism?

If you are reading this, then my introduction to philosophy did not scare you off. And if you missed my latest article then consider this forewarning that we are going to be studying the topic of existentialist philosophy, philosophers, and their own philosophies for the next month or so.

Philosophy 101

Webster’s Dictionary simply defines philosophy as:  “the study of ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning of life, etc.”  “a particular set of ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning of life, etc.”  “a set of ideas about how to do something or how to live.”

The Line of Despair

Francis Schaeffer’s definition of what he calls the “line of despair” is basically the period of time after the 1890’s in Europe and 1935 in the U.S. Before these times society was living with the notion of “absolutes.” At least they understood them, whether they had logically thought this idea through. After these times Schaeffer says that man started to think differently concerning truth.

What’s the Point?

I forget when I first stumbled upon the Book of Ecclesiastes. I remember I started to give it the cursory glance once-over and, at first, took it to mean that everything we do is pointless. If that is the case, then why care at all.

Shell of a Man
